Black Panther Is All About The Women! Get The Deets In Our Review Roundup!

The reviews are in today, and Black Panther is sounding like another solid Marvel Studios entry to some — and something much more to others. First, absolutely glowing [...] The reviews are in today, and Black Panther is sounding like another solid Marvel Studios entry to some -- and something much more to others. So what do the range of positive words (at the time of this writing, the film holds a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with 51 reviews counted) have in common? First, absolutely glowing reviews for the production design (Hannah Beachler), costumes (Ruth E. Carter), and cinematography (Rachel Morrison). Video: Kendrick Lamar & The Weeknd Bless Us With New Black Panther Song Pray For Me And the supporting cast, including Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, and villain Michael B. Jordan, are consistently lauded as standouts. While this is mostly a good thing, especially for women's representation in the world of superhero movies -- some feel Chadwick Boseman's stoic lead is in danger of being overshadowed by everyone else... See what critics had to say (below): Jason Gerrasio, Business Insider: "Like "Wonder Woman" last year, "Black Panther" is a project that fans have been waiting decades to see. And just like "Wonder Woman," it was worth the wait." Liz Braun, Toronto Sun: "Black Panther is every bit as good as you were hoping. Actually -- it's better. A terrific screenplay from Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole elevates this thing way beyond the usual boundaries of the Marvel Universe." Jake Coyle, AP: "Just as he did in the surprisingly sensational Rocky reboot "Creed," Coogler hasn't reinvented the genre so much as electrified it with a new perspective and a rare talent for marrying naturalistic character development with spectacle muscle." Haleigh Foutch, Collider: "Black Panther isn't just a crowd-pleasing superhero movie (though it is that for sure), it's a vital moment in cinema history and a heartfelt, thoughtful exploration of the scars of colonialism and the hope for healing." Manohla Dargis, The NY Times: "It's important to the movie's politics and myth-building that he is surrounded by a phalanx of women, among them a battalion of women warriors called the Dora Milaje. These aren't moviedom's irritatingly token strong chicks, the tough babes with sizable biceps and skills but no real roles." Robbie Collin, Telegraph: "Black Panther seems to overcome the genre's long-standing neuroses around creating rounded, exciting roles for women by just getting on with it." Alonso Duralde, TheWrap: "Black Panther does such a great job introducing the fascinating supporting characters in his orbit that it can barely find time to dig into its purported protagonist." Marc Bernardin, Nerdist: "As a nerd and as a black man, I've been waiting for this movie for my entire life, whether I knew it or not. The fact that Black Panther gets so much right, but one crucial thing wrong, is both thrilling and maddening." David Ehrlich, IndieWire: "In making a movie that so lucidly allows one group of people to see themselves on screen, Coogler has created the first Marvel movie in which anyone can see themselves on screen. That's an accomplishment all viewers can appreciate — one that gives new depth to the overarching themes of the MCU, finally grounding this franchise with the kind of stakes that it needs to support its cosmic scale." Jamie Broadnax, BlackGirlNerds: "I left the theater wanting to see this movie at least 10 more times. I already know that Black Panther‘s weight in gold at the box office will be in repeat viewings, because we just won't want this cinematic experience to end." [Image via Marvel.].....»»

The movie is hitting theaters at midnight, and we’ll finally be able to see the highly anticipated film, which stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis. Be sure to check out Black Panther, in theaters tonight at midnight! There are spoilers ahead, so read at your own risk! Click inside to see what happens after the Black Panther credits… There are two scenes after the movie ends. The first hits mid-credits. The scene takes place at the United Nations in Vienna, where T’Challa (aka Black Panther) shares with the council that Wakanda will be more open and will begin to share their knowledge and resources. The scene ends with one of the council members asking what resources they have to offer. T’Challa then smirks. Of course, this must refer to Vibranium, a very powerful material. Black Panther’s suit and Captain America’s shield are both made of Vibranium, and in addition, Vibranium is what Ultron was collecting which ultimately made Vision (played by Paul Bettany). The second scene takes place at the end of the credits in a remote hut in Wakanda. We see Bucky Barnes (the Winter Soldier) wake up and emerge out of a tent and speak to T’Challa’s sister, Shuri and thank her. During this scene, the kids of Wakanda refer him as the “White Wolf.” The last time we saw Bucky was in a mid-credits scene after Captain America: Civil War. He was in a lab in Wakanda where he agreed to be placed in cryogenic stasis. Captain America thanked T’Challa for looking after Bucky and T’Challa said he’ll be safe in Wakanda. FYI: In the comics, the “White Wolf” was actually a character named Hunter, an orphaned boy that T’Challa’s father raised. The film ends saying that Black Panther will return in Avengers: Infinity War......»»

Black Panther Is Still Dominating The Box Office — It Just Buried Tomb Raider And Crossed The $600 Million Mark!

Can't argue with success!!! Black Panther continued dominating the box office AGAIN this weekend, landing once again in the top spot in North America, which is even bigger news because it far surpassed Tomb Raider in that film's opening weekend! Related: Chinese Producers Say Dog Abuse On Set Was An Accident The Ryan Coogler-directed Black Panther took in a domestic box office haul of $27 million over the last two days, which was a couple bills more than Tomb Raider's muted $23.5 million from 3,854 theaters across North America. For Black Panther, that means the historic movie has now taken in more than $600 million at the domestic box office! Truly incredible!!! And for Tomb Raider, that $23.5 million number is no doubt a disappointment for Warner Bros. and MGM, which together worked hard to reboot the female-led franchise based on the video game. But this weekend's Tomb Raider opener was no match for Angelina Jolie's version in the early 2000s. The news isn't all bad for Tomb Raider; the movie did do $84.5 million from 65 markets overseas (tops worldwide on the foreign weekend chart), and in total put together a tally of $102.5 million on its opening weekend. Not too bad... but still... Elsewhere at the box office, the other big headline centered around I Can Only Imagine, a faith-based film from Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate, which did a surprising $17.1 million from 1,628 theaters. That total was good enough to defeat both A Wrinkle Of Time and Love, Simon this weekend in a VERY surprise upset!!! Of course, no one could touch Black Panther... again... Sellers’ most accessible work, however, comes from his fruitful collaboration with director Blake Edwards, and on June 27 Shout! Factory is releasing the 6-disc Blu-ray set The Pink Panther Collection as part of its Shout Select line. As part of the Shout Select line, the collection contains the films The Pink Panther, A Shot In The Dark, The Return of the Pink Panther, The Pink Panther Strikes Again, Revenge of the Pink Panther and Trail of the Pink Panther. With Sellers’ passing in 1980, Trail of the Pink Panther (released in 1982) features footage of Sellers (he and Edwards were working on another Panther film before he passed) that’s interwoven into the movie. The collection comes with a 24-page book with an essay from film critic Jerry Beck plus new interviews with cast and crew, audio commentaries, still galleries and TV spots. Though it would have been great to have included 1983’s Curse of the Pink Panther, which centered on the disappearance of Clouseau, the franchise will always be known as Edwards and Sellers’ creative journey, so the omission is definitely understandable.
