[...] There's absolutely no question which flick ruled the box office this weekend: It is the most popular movie in America, with a HUGE opening weekend in theaters over the last few days! In fact, the Stephen King adaptation took in so much money, it became the biggest opener EVER for a movie in the horror genre! Incredible!! Related: Watch The Brand New Fifty Shades Freed Trailer HERE! Over 4,103 theaters across all of North America this weekend, It has taken in a grand total of $117.2 million, setting the horror genre opening weekend record and BLOWING AWAY all of its first-week opener competition!!! This is particularly important for the North American box office considering it's been a few months since a major hit in theaters, and the summer was one of the worst in recent memory for production companies and movie houses. But now, It has redeemed all that -- at least for the time being -- by shattering a ton of records and bringing in a legit nine figure payday along the way! comScore movie analyst Paul Dergarabedian spoke about the clown Pennywise and the It film doing so well at the box office this weekend, per THR (below): "Pennywise has certainly brought big dollars back to the movie theater, and not a moment too soon. Let's face it, people love horror movies, and within the darkened walls of a movie theater, the communal electricity that is created by a bunch of people being scared out of their wits is almost as fun as the movie itself; this is why the film has obliterated expectations and is setting records." That's a hell of a lot better than some of the other new releases that came through this weekend, though. For one, Home Again -- starring Reese Witherspoon -- underwhelmed by drawing just $9 million over 2,940 theaters in a very disappointing second place showing in theaters. Related: Get More Movie Industry News HERE! And at the specialty box office, Charlie Sheen's new drama 9/11 fell REALLY flat, drawing just $162,450 from 400 theaters -- which equates out to a brutal average of $406 per location. Yikes. But at least It saved the day this weekend!! What about you, Perezcious readers?! Did you go see anything in theaters the last few days?? Let us know what you saw in the comments (below)!!! Midnight, Texas that debuts on NBC tonight is more like the Horror shows from the ’80s and ’90s. There was something about them that left you feeling scared. Manfred (François Arnaud) has been having some problems where he lives, so his grandmother tells him to move to Midight, Texas where he will be safe. Sounds normal until I tell you his grandmother has passed on and Manfred can talk to the dead. That ability is not the weirdest one there. There are witches, werewolves, vampires and many more monsters of the week that we will be meeting in the coming weeks. Most residents are good but not all. That will leave Manfred being the one who will help solve some of the local murders which is a good thing because this way the town can keep their secrets from the neighboring police who do not know their secret. Like tonight when the girlfriend of one of the resident’s washed up after his proposal he becomes the #1 suspect. But did he do it? The cops think so, and now Midnight, Texas will use their powers to protect him. But at what cost to everyone? The cost of one’s life is the answer and it is not the only one. Tune in for a Horror show that leaves you wanting more and also freaking you out before you go to sleep. Which is much better than the nightmares the government has inflicted on all of us......»»

"Derivative" & "Bad" But Still "A Step Up From Its Immediate Ancestor" — A Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Review Roundup!

OK. As you no doubt know, Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are once again saving the world's dinosaurs in this sequel to its 2015 predecessor -- and movie critics are starting to weigh in on the film with their reviews!! Related: At Least The Final Trailer Was Insane??? Suffice to say, the movie is just OK for most -- not their favorite summer fare, but loads better than the first Jurassic World three years ago. And we guess that's, uh, maybe a good thing?? But regardless of what summer crowds may think about it as they flock to theaters to see some hot Chris Pratt shots, ch-ch-check out the critical reviews and remarks in our review roundup for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (below)!!! Gav Murphy, IGN: "J.A. Bayona feels like the perfect director to take control of Fallen Kingdom after proving he can handle large-scale destruction with confidence but is equally capable of delivering intimate scares. There are echoes of his previous works such as The Impossible (big old natural disaster) and The Orphanage (creepy old secret-filled house) in Fallen Kingdom but more impressive is how it draws on further inspirations like Alfred Hitchcock and Hammer horror style suspense. The latter is definitely felt throughout the film and Bayona's use of light and shadows to create tension is one of the highlights of Fallen Kingdom. Whether it's a toothy Baryonyx stalking through a tunnel lit by a menacing drop of lava or the claws of the terrifying new Indoraptor illuminated by a child's night-light, Bayona's horror seems classy and rarely resorts to simply jump scares." Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune: "I like the new Jurassic World movie better than the 2015 edition. Bayona's direction is considerably more stylish and actively mobile than Colin Trevorrow's was. Even if nothing quite measures up in this movie, other than composer Michael Giacchino's lush yet subtle orchestral colors, Bayona and his writers wanted to give audiences a different kind of monster movie. That they did." Brian Truitt, USA Today: "Bayona knows why audiences flock to a Jurassic movie and the best thing he does is create a strong empathy for the exquisitely detailed computer-generated dinos. The T. rex continues his role of most inexplicable recurring Jurassic protagonist, and one horned dino busts Owen out of a jam before going to town on well-dressed rich folks...More than ever, it's their Kingdom. We're just the empty-calorie snacks." Johnny Oleksinski, New York Post: "Fallen Kingdom is a more interesting, and less obvious, story than the usual Tyrannosaurus romps, which tend to be death-defying games of hide-and-seek. But you can hear the eye rolls during an 11th-hour twist involving the benevolent billionaire's granddaughter, which is way too philosophical for a film where dudes' heads are bitten off by lizards. Jeff Goldblum, making a cameo appearance as Dr. Ian Malcolm, provides all the high-mindedness we need as he natters on about chaos theory in an early monologue. Regardless, it's nice to see the series back on track. For 20 years it reduced itself to lunkheaded horror and Tea Leoni shrieking to the sky at the expense of its most essential element — the wonderment of seeing a living, breathing dinosaur. In making even the most vicious creatures more than just hungry, hungry dinos, the aging franchise has rediscovered its inner child. And ours." Adam Graham, Detroit News: "The wow factor of the Jurassic Park series is long gone, replaced by a routine sense of tedium. Close the park for good already." Chris Klimek, NPR: "As derivative as Fallen Kingdom is, it's still a step up from its immediate ancestor." Rain Jokinen, MullingMovies.com: "At this point in the seemingly never-ending Jurassic film franchise, it can safely be said that humans are idiots and they should just let the dinosaurs have the planet." Todd Jorgenson, Cinemalogue: "This uninspired sequel extensively rehashes what's come before and teases what's ahead without providing much incentive to invest in what's currently on the screen." Roxana Hadadi, Chesapeake Family Magazine: "Despite some good jump scares, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is irritatingly derivative of every preceding film in this franchise." Barry Hertz, Globe And Mail: "Like almost every other major studio film this summer, Fallen Kingdom plays dumb, and happily." Well there you have it! What do U think, Perezcious readers?! Do these reviews turn you off to the movie?? Or do you want to go see it as much (or more) now?! Let us know in the comments (below)!!! [Image via NBC.].....»»

Pennywise The Clown Drags Down "The Losers Club" In The Still-Terrifying It Remake — Review Roundup!

After a quiet, blockbuster-less summer, Stephen King fans are dying to be terrorized by Pennywise the Clown on the big screen. Overall, critics enjoyed Andy Muschietti's take on the horror classic — specifically, the [...] After a quiet, blockbuster-less summer, Stephen King fans are dying to be terrorized by Pennywise the Clown on the big screen. But based on the first viewings of the It remake, the iconic demon was the least impressive part of the Warner Bros. adaptation! Overall, critics enjoyed Andy Muschietti's take on the horror classic -- specifically, the dynamic of the film's core group, The Losers Club. The friendships and banter of the fearful heroes will satisfy audiences craving some ‘80s nostalgia a la Stand By Me, The Goonies, and Stranger Things. QUIZ: What Type Of Horror Movie Is Your Life? But Bill Skarsgård's Pennywise had many critics covering their eyes -- not out of fear, but because of a cartoonish, cinematic intensity many felt was a clown-step in the wrong direction from Tim Curry's terrifying version. Though 2017 Pennywise still had his truly petrifying moments, and the demon's other disturbing incarnations sprinkled throughout the R-rated film will make most fans float with a joyful fear. See what the critics had to say (below)! Andrew Barker, Variety: "Focusing entirely on the childhood-set portions of King's book, it's a collection of alternately terrifying, hallucinatory, and ludicrous nightmare imagery; a sometimes jarring pileup of moods, ranging from haunted house horror to nostalgic hangout humor; a popcorn movie about gruesome child murders; a series of well-crafted yet decreasingly effective suspense setpieces; and a series of well-acted coming-of-age sequences that don't quite fully mature." Hillary Busis, Vanity Fair: "When It's seven-core performers are arguing about the merits of loogie mass vs. distance or bashfully exploring their first flashes of puppy love, It is a delight. Every member of the gang that comes to call themselves the Losers' Club is natural and charismatic, especially the luminous [Sophia] Lillis as Beverly, the only girl in the group, and [Finn] Wolfhard, whose wisecracking Richie easily walks away with the movie." Matt Goldberg, Collider: "The film almost seems afraid to really let Skarsgard shine with Pennywise because he might overshadow the Losers. There are a few scenes where he really gets to let loose, but he's stuck in a pattern—It is the predator, and the kids are his prey. The creature is only motivated by hunger and a need to feed on fear. That's not particularly interesting, and while you can get some frightening images out of his creations, the heart of the movie needs to be the characters who can grow and change, the Losers." Eric Kohn, IndieWire: "Things pop up from the shadows right on cue. The clown cackles aplenty, mashes his awful teeth, and wiggles his eyebrows. As the kids discuss It's legacy, ominous music sets in to underscore their tales. Repeat. Though gorgeously shot by [cinematographer] Chung-hoon Chung, no amount of stunning visuals can rescue It from the thud of familiarity." John DeFore, The Hollywood Reporter: "It is a solid thriller that works best when it is most involved in its adolescent heroes' non-monster-related concerns. It will prove much more satisfying to King's legion of fans than [Dark Tower] did. But it falls well short of the King-derived film it clearly wants to evoke, Stand By Me; and newcomers who were spoiled by the eight richly developed hours of Stranger Things may wonder what the big deal is supposed to be." Chris Nashaway, EW: "It is essentially two movies. The better by far (and it's very good) is the one that feels like a darker Stand by Me — a nostalgic coming-of-age story about seven likable outcasts riding around on their bikes and facing their fears together... Less successful are the sections that trot out Pennywise. The more we see of him, the less scary he becomes. Unless you're really afraid of clowns, he just seems kind of cartoony after a while." Dan Callahan, The Wrap: "Bill Skarsgård's Pennywise has yellow eyes that are always slightly staring off to the sides. His whitened forehead is very large, which makes this Pennywise look more like a toy than a man. A lot of the time in this version of "It," Pennywise feels more like an effect than a person, and sometimes this is a problem, because a visual effect is too distanced from us to be as scary as Curry was using just his made-up clown face and his growling voice." Katie Rife, A.V. Club: "While Pennywise is legitimately terrifying, overall, It is more intense than it is chilling. No punches are pulled in depicting graphic violence against children, meaning this movie may be too much for even the most Stephen King-obsessed middle schoolers. But aside from the periodic surfacing of Bill Denbrough's younger brother Georgie—whose death at the hands (or teeth, as the case may be) of Pennywise kicks off the plot—the anxiety is more brief and pummeling than slow and creeping." It hits theaters September 8. [Image via Warner Bros..].....»»

I believe when the horror genre makes the public aware that a film is based on a true story it sells more tickets. Authenticity is always king at the box office. And the possibility of a situation like The Strangers movie happening in real life made the studio enough money to get the green-light for a sequel. Sometimes Hollywood’s timing is a tad off and how soon is too soon doesn’t even get brought up. I can bet on there being a horror film based on true Weinstein events within the next couple of years. The new Slender Man movie is promising to be the scariest thing you’ll see in 2018 and the idea of this movie releasing has the father of a teen slain in the name of Slender Man terrified. He hopes all theaters in Wisconsin won’t feature the flick. Sony’s “Slender Man” movie is “extremely distasteful” and is capitalizing on tragedy, says the father of one of the girls who stabbed their classmate in an attempt to please the fictional character. Bill Weier, father of Anissa Weier, said he hopes local Wisconsin theaters won’t show the film when it is released in May. There’s a minority of the population that takes the internet too seriously and ending the life of another individual because you believe in an internet meme is taking things too far. But Hollywood won’t halt a release just because someone died. The only way movies get cancelled these days are if non-consensual sexual shenanigans were afoot. Because men wacking off in front of women who haven’t said yes yet is way more heinous than a movie reenacting a recent murder.
