"They Were Warned": Deadpool 2 Performer Says Stunt Coordinators Knew Racer Wasn"t Ready

It's been just over a week since the tragic death of stuntwoman Joi "S.J." Harris on the set of Deadpool 2, and investigators are trying to learn how this could have happened. But according to one stunt performer, the answer is simple: she wasn't being ready. Harris on the set of Deadpool 2, and investigators are trying to learn how this could have happened. But according to one stunt performer, the answer is simple: she wasn't being ready. Related: Zazie Beetz Pays Tribute To Her Stuntwoman The stunt in question was apparently routine, simply driving through a door, down a ramp, and stopping. Another stuntwoman who was training Harris tells The Hollywood Reporter that stunt coordinators could see that the pro motorcycle racer, who had never done a movie before, was having trouble: "She was improving, but I was watching her and, oh my God, I thought, ‘It's just a matter of time before she crashes into a wall or runs somebody over.'" She added: "I cringed every time she went out. Like, when is she going to crash?" The stuntwoman says she left the set and told producers she wanted out if they were going to go through with using Harris: "They were warned, yes!" So why did producers insist on employing Harris if she wasn't ready? Related: Ryan Reynolds' Somber Statement According to veteran Hollywood stunt coordinator Conrad Palmisano, who says he has been in touch with some stunt workers on the Deadpool set: "The producers put pressure to have somebody of the same sex and ethnicity in a position she wasn't qualified to be in. The stunt coordinators caved to the pressure. All the stunt people could do was take it to their higher-ups. They're going to follow their chain of command." Harris was doubling for actress Zazie Beetz, who plays mercenary Domino in the film. It seems there are so few black female stunt performers, at least capable of doing motorcycle work, that producers had to go outside the stunt community to find someone to match Beetz. Is there a lack of diversity in the stunt performers? Perhaps due to lack of demand -- not enough black women being cast in action hero roles? Others don't buy that this was Harris' fault. Moto-D Racing president Scott Diamond, whose company sponsored Harris as a racer, told Variety last week: "I don't know the specifics of the stunt, but I know she would have been safe and prudent. She was a very responsible and mature person. She wasn't wild and crazy." But that doesn't mean she was ready for a completely different job. We hope to learn more as the investigation goes on, especially if this is something that can be prevented in the future. [Image via 20th Century Fox/Instagram.].....»»

Obviously, Top Gun was one of the defining movies of Cruise’s career, with him flying military jets. And there was that electrifying opening sequence in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. (Believe it or not, he did all of his own stunts in that scene!) Cruise takes to the air once again in American Made, a movie based on the real-life story of Barry Seal, an airline pilot-turned-government operative-turned-drug runner. Since it’s based on actual events, Cruise wanted the film to feel as realistic as possible, so he insisted that all of the flying scenes be done with actual airplanes. New Details — And Unanswered Questions — Emerge In Investigation Of The Walking Dead Stuntman"s Death

How does a routine fall lead to the death of an experienced stuntman? That's what Georgia police are investigating after the tragic death of stunt performer John Bernecker, who died on July 12 after plummeting headfirst from a 22-foot balcony on the set of The Walking Dead. Capt. John Kennedy has been assigned the case through the Coweta County Sheriff's Office, which has been instructed to "freeze" all provision of investigation materials to the media amid the probe. Local law enforcement ran into trouble right after the incident. Officials failed to interview stunt coordinator Monty L. Simons on the scene as most crewmembers had been instructed to leave within minutes of the accident. Photo: Ryan Phillippe In Hospital After 'Freak Accident'! Responding officer Deputy Sheriff J.P. Traylor was also unable to interview TWD's first assistant director on the episode, the person who generally is responsible for set safety. Instead, Traylor was able to speak with only two of those present: second assistant director Matthew Goodwin and actor Austin Amelio, who was also on the balcony during the fall. Bernecker's girlfriend Jennifer Cocker, a fellow stunt performer, has questioned Amelio's presence on the balcony, noting it was the wrong move to "put a super professional stuntman with an inexperienced actor who doesn't know what he's doing." But bigger issues are still being called into question, like why set photos show a balcony without any padding below, and why it took 17 minutes for an ambulance to reach the performer. Related: Kim Zolciak 'Almost Fully Recovered' From 2015 Stroke According to Traylor's report, Bernecker was supposed to fall from the balcony railing onto a pad made of boxes, PortaPit pads, and another large pad, but he missed the padding by inches. The report quotes Goodwin saying that Bernecker signaled he was ready and got most of the way over, but "did not appear to get good separation from the balcony." He attempted to abort the stunt by grabbing onto the railing with both hands, but failed. Experts say that stunt performers are responsible for reviewing the safety of the stunt design and demanding changes if necessary. However, this accident may lead to changes in the SAG-AFTRA agreement between the studios and the union to give stunt performers more control over their own safety. Veteran stuntman Conrad Palmisano says we may never find out what specifically went wrong in the ill-fated stunt, telling The Hollywood Reporter: "Something obviously went wrong. It's never a black and white thing. It's always a pinch of this, a dash of that, then something tragic happens." Bernecker had racked up 93 stunt credits in less than a decade. Our hearts go out to his loved ones during this devastating time. [Image via Facebook.].....»»
