Leaked Miss America CEO Emails Reveal Fat-Shaming, Slut-Shaming, & Name-Calling!

HuffPost got their hands on three years of internal emails from the Miss America organization, thanks to two inside sources disturbed by what they regularly saw. Now CEO Sam Haskell (above, right) and head writer Lewis Friedman have a lot to answer for. Related: Miss Texas DRAGGED Donald Trump For Failing To Properly Condemn White Supremacy In their convos, they fat-shamed, slut-shamed, and used sexist language against pageant winners and contestants. In one email, Haskell wrote: "I have decided that when referring to a woman who was once Miss America, we are no longer going to call them Forever Miss Americas....please change all script copy to reflect that they are Former Miss Americas!" To which Friedman responded: "I'd already changed "Forevers" to "Cunts." Does that work for you?" Haskell shot back: "Perfect...bahahaha." In August 2014, Haskell got an email about 2013 Miss America Mallory Hagan, who was infamously fat-shamed after her win. Apparently her hairdresser had been telling stories publicly about her sex life. Haskell shared this with Friedman, saying: "Not a single day passes that I am not told some horrible story about Mallory." Friedman responded: "Mallory's preparing for her new career … as a blimp in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade As she continues to destroy her own credibility, her voice will attract less and less notice while she continues her descent to an unhappy pathetic footnote... Ps. Are we four the only ones not to have fucked Mallory?" Haskell approved, saying: "It appears we are the only ones!" He then shared a story about Hagan "seducing" a friend's son. He joked he had to break the news to the mother: "I told her he needs to have a blood test because we lost count of the number of men she slept with at 25." In December 2014, Friedman wrote to Haskell to give his condolences on the death of "former" Mary Ann Mobley. The subject line was: "It should have been Kate Shindle." (Kate Shindle was crowned Miss America in 1998.) Haskell responded: "Thanks so much Coach...even in my sadness you can make me laugh...how was the Kennedy Center Honors? Love you and appreciate you! Sam." Eesh! Related: First Woman With Down Syndrome Competed In The Miss Minnesota USA Pageant! In response to all this, a Miss America Organization spokesman revealed Friedman had already been fired over an investigation into the emails: "The Miss America Organization Board of Directors was notified about the concern of inappropriate language in email communications several months ago. Consequently, the organization's Board of Directors took the allegations of inappropriate comments very seriously and formed an investigative committee. As a result of the investigation, the Board directed the organization terminate the relationship with most egregious author of inappropriate comments. In addition, the Board has started the process of instituting additional policies and procedures for communication." As for Haskell, we'll have to wait and see. [Image via Twitter.].....»»

Former Miss Americas Kate Shindle & Gretchen Carlson Want Women to Take Control of Miss America Pageant

After the pageant’s CEO Sam Haskell resigned after inappropriate emails he wrote about former contestants, past winners Kate Shindle and Gretchen Carlson have released a statement for a much needed call to action for the program. “While it is reassuring that some of the perpetrators of the abuses within the Miss America Organization have resigned, this by no means fulfills the need for a thorough housecleaning of the Board of Directors,” Kate and Gretchen started her statement. The ladies continued: “We will continue to demand the resignations of every individual who either participated in the abuse of women or stood by and was complicit by failing to conduct proper due diligence, as legally required by their fiduciary obligations. In addition, we expect that no new board members will be appointed until every implicated board member has resigned.” “As evidenced by the thousands of voices – of contestants, former titleholders, local, state and national volunteers – being raised in support of our goals, this Board of Directors has lost the trust of the country,” Kate continued. “For the good of the organization, they must step away. The women of Miss America are determined to take back our program. This is not over yet.” Read their statement in full inside… Statement from @GretchenCarlson and @kateshindle regarding @MissAmericaOrg pic.twitter.com/964UteeHsI — Gretchen Carlson (@GretchenCarlson) December 23, 2017.....»»

Emails that were exposed in the new report show that Sam thought it was funny when one of his colleagues wrote “It should have been Kate Shindle” while writing about the death of former Miss America Mary Ann Mobley. Shindle won the pageant in 1998 and went on to become a successful theatre actress with starring roles in Legally Blonde, Cabaret, and Fun Home. She currently is the president of the Actors’ Equity Association, the union the represents stage actors and stage managers. “I almost don’t have the words to respond to Yashar Ali‘s revelations about the current leadership of the Miss America Organization,” Kate wrote in a statement released on Twitter, in which she called for the full Board of Directors to resign. “Today, I read that a member of the production team wished I were dead, and that Executive Chairman and CEO Sam Haskell laughed about it. I read that the Board of Directors conspired to change the rules of the competition specifically to destroy another Miss America’s business. I read that that same board passed around photos to email each other degrading comments about a Miss America’s body,” she added. “It makes me physically ill.” You can read the full statement below. .@yashar pic.twitter.com/Aer8XyoCjE — kate shindle (@kateshindle) December 22, 2017.....»»

Miss Massachusetts Contestant Resigns Her Title Over Pageant"s Skit Mocking #MeToo!

Maude Gorman may no longer be competing for the title of Miss Massachusetts — but she's already won our hearts! The beauty queen — and badass CrossFit athlete — resigned her title as Miss Plymouth County last week after an offensive sketch mocked the #MeToo Movement. Apparently while Miss America at large is leaving the swimsuit competition [...] Maude Gorman may no longer be competing for the title of Miss Massachusetts -- but she's already won our hearts! The beauty queen -- and badass CrossFit athlete -- resigned her title as Miss Plymouth County last week after an offensive sketch mocked the #MeToo Movement. Apparently while Miss America at large is leaving the swimsuit competition behind, many local pageants leading up to it are reluctant to drop the portion. Related: Todd Chrisley To Be Named Miss California USA Director — With A Whole Reality Show About It! In a skit during the final competition of Miss Massachusetts, a contestant praying to God says she can't understand why swimsuits had to go, and God responds "Me Too" -- to boisterous applause. See the ugh moment for yourself (below): But Maude Gorman was not clapping. She told CNN it was at that moment backstage that she decided she no longer wanted to be a part of the organization: "I instantly knew I had to do something. It was going to eat away at me if I didn't... we were all shocked. We said, 'Oh my god. I cannot believe that just happened. Did that just really happen?' I wasn't comfortable staying as Miss Plymouth County. It went against everything I have worked hard for. I was Miss Massachusetts World in 2015. I saw myself as a leader in the community and made appearances to speak out about sexual assault and tell my story." Maude was gang raped at only 13 years old. She remained silent about the incident for three years, developing PTSD. She now bravely shares her story to help others who are suffering in silence. That's why, as she said in her post announcing her resignation that she could not just "let it go": "Instead, I will stand up for every individual who has ever had the courage to speak out; and for every person who felt liberated by the #metoo movement. I will not allow ANYONE to take away that empowerment and liberation, or make it anything less than what it is: AMAZING." See her entire, inspiring message on Instagram (below): Today, I officially resigned from the title of Miss Plymouth County 2018. While I’m grateful for the opportunities that @missamerica creates for young women, I am also internally conflicted; as the #metoo movement was mocked on stage during the final competition of Miss Massachusetts. As both a survivor, and advocate for victims rights and sexual violence on a whole, I refuse to stand idly by and simply "let this go". Instead, I will stand up for every individual who has ever had the courage to speak out; and for every person who felt liberated by the #metoo movement. I will not allow ANYONE to take away that empowerment and liberation, or make it anything less than what it is: AMAZING. #metoo #missplymouthcounty #nomore #rainn #surviveandthriveA post shared by Maude Gorman 🇺🇸 (@maudernliving) on Jul 5, 2018 at 9:03am PDT Amazing. And just on Sunday, when her story was getting more national coverage, she shared even more about the work more important to her than any crown: I woke up this morning to find that my recent interview with @nbcnews went national. Here are a few things you might not know about my work in advocacy: • I’ve helped built houses with my bare hands for survivors of violence • I’ve advocated to elected officials ranging from local Mayors, to State Governors, and even staff at the White House; including the White House Advisor on Violence against Women. •I’ve spoken at national, and international conferences in an effort to speak out more specifically on the effects of trauma on youth. •I’ve worked with several shelters and homes that offer survivors a safe haven in their transition away from abuse •I’ve partnered with leading hospitals, such as MassGeneral for Children, to provide children seeking emergency treatment for sexual abuse a tote bag of resources (including a change of clothes, teddy bear, coloring books, etc) •I’ve published articles sharing my story, in hopes of inspiring others to do the same; and preventing years of painful secrecy • I’ve had my research on sexual violence shared with child life development specialists of the United States Navy at Norfolk Naval Base in Virginia • I’ve presented at seminars with the Uniformed Victim Advocates of the United States Coast Guard at Base Boston • I’ve advocated for the passing of several bills benefiting survivors of sexual violence • I’ve spoken at rallies, protests, and led walks for justice • I’ve volunteered with the National Alliance on Mental Illness as a public policy associate in an effort to stand up for those suffering from PTSD, and depression; just as I have •I’ve met with colleges and universities to discuss response procedures, and have ran awareness campaigns with both RAINN and Start By Believing * I’ve volunteered as a Rape Crisis Counselor, and acted as a Youth Ambassador for the Youth Access to Support Services program with the Center for Hope and Healing And there is still so much more work to be done, there is still so much more progress to be made, and justice to be found. I will continue to fearlessly defend survivors, and be the voice for those suffering in secrecy. You are not alone #metooA post shared by Maude Gorman 🇺🇸 (@maudernliving) on Jul 8, 2018 at 4:52am PDT Miss Massachusetts organization apologized for offending on its Facebook page immediately after the event. But that doesn't erase the sound of an auditorium collectively scoffing at women being brave in the face of sexual assault. Maude told CNN she's happy to focus on athletics and advocacy: "I am done with pageants. I don't see myself competing again. I am happy with leaving the pageant world behind me." Good for you, gurl! Miss America Axing Swimsuits

Finally. After decades of covering up with swimsuits, we’ll get to the contestants walk around naked. JK. The competition, which historically has been just a step up from a wet t-shirt contest over Spring Break in Daytona, FL, is trying to adapt to the stage four wokeness of 2018, and Gretchen Carlson, the Miss America Organization chair of the Board of Trustees, said in a statement: We’ve heard from a lot of young women who say, ‘We’d love to be a part of your program but we don’t want to be out there in high heels and a swimsuit,’ so guess what, you don’t have to do that anymore. Who doesn’t want to be empowered, learn leadership skills and pay for college and be able to show the world who you are as a person from the inside of your soul. That’s what we’re judging them on now. We are now open, inclusive and transparent and I want to inspire thousands of young people across this country to come and be a part of our program. We want you and we want to celebrate your accomplishments and your talents and then we want to hand you scholarships. Yes, the competition, which has previously – admittedly or not – required contestants to look like they could charm the dang pants off a table of bank branch managers chowing down at a Toledo Hooters, will now be open to all women no matter what. During the next televised competition expect for the host to wheel out college-bound amputees, clinically overweight chicks, trucker lesbians, and just all around monsters. Serena Williams might even give it a go. JK again. Bathing suits or not, the women will still be caking on their foundation and extreme dieting in preparation for the competition, and if, God forbid, one of them weighs more than ninety-pounds, the media will consider the bikini-less experiment a success. If Miss America really isn’t about looks, why aren’t the contestants wearing head-to-toe burkas? Why aren’t men allowed to compete? Why does it even need to be televised? Can’t the contestants just write in an essay? These are just a few of the questions that the paltry number of viewers will be contemplating while trying and failing to get off to the whore parade during its next reincarnation on September 9th on ABC. The media landscape is more politically polarized than ever, and unable to choose between either continuing to objectify hot women or to exclusively feature non-gender conforming Parkland shooting survivors, Miss America will surely lose its last shreds of relevancy. Hopefully we still have enough time for them to solve world peace. Miss America Pageant Apologizes For Insensitive Me Too Joke

Women’s bodies aren’t built how they used to be, so instead of encouraging dieting it’s easier to do away with an entire swimsuit competition. Wouldn’t want to offend anyone. Which is damn near impossible these days. Unsurprisingly, a joke told at the Miss Massachusetts event for the Miss America competition offended a few people. This is truly turning into a planet where we can not have nice things like comedy or admire how well a woman fills out her swimwear. Here is the offending joke told by an emcee during a skit on stage at the event: “We may have well seen the last ever swimsuit competition on stage. It’s very upsetting and I’m trying to understand, God, why it happened.” “Me too, Amy,” said the man, who also held a sign reading #MeToo just in case anyone didn’t get the joke. The apology from Rich Allegretto (man responsible for the joke) on Miss Massachusetts Org: “I would like to set the record straight about the skit during the Miss Massachusetts finals. First and most importantly, my sincere apologies to those who drew any parallels between a joke about the swimsuit competition and sexual assault,” said Rich Allegretto. “The skit was meant as a satirical poke at those who are upset that swimsuit is going away. It was intended to be a nod to the #MeToo movement, not a knock on it.” What rubbed the people the wrong way here is the fact that some people honestly believe Me Too is above being used as a punchline. It’s just another instance of something else in this world that doesn’t make sense like overweight security guards. First no swimsuits, and now no one is allowed to joke about it? Miss America will soon be known as the prude pageant where overdressed women do nothing but discuss their day at work while eating snacks. So basically it’s heading in the direction of becoming a televised book club. I already miss the days where well endowed women slipped down to their bathing suits and pretended to care about the tons of plastic in the ocean. Hopefully cable TV buckles before the Miss America competition meets its demise.
