James Middleton Bravely Reveals His Battle with Depression

James Middleton, the younger brother of Kate and Pippa, is bravely opening up about his secret struggle with depression and being diagnosed with attention-deficit disorder (ADD). The 31-year-old businessman wrote an op-ed piece for The Daily Mail, which was published just one day after his Instagram account went public. “I know I’m richly blessed and live a privileged life. But it did not make me immune to depression,” James wrote in the article. “It is tricky to describe the condition. It is not merely sadness. It is an illness, a cancer of the mind.” “It’s not a feeling but an absence of feelings,” he said. “You exist without purpose or direction. I couldn’t feel joy, excitement or anticipation–only heart-thudding anxiety propelled me out of bed in the morning. I didn’t actually contemplate suicide—but I didn’t want to live in the state of mind I was in either.” James sought help in 2016 and discovered he had an irregular heartbeat due to stress and anxiety, but he did not address his depression until the end of 2017. The decision to speak out stems from his sister’s work in the mental health field. He said, “This is precisely what my brother-in-law Prince William, my sister Catherine and Prince Harry are advocating through their mental health charity Heads Together.” “People have asked me, too, if my public profile has made it harder for me. Would I have become so depressed if I hadn’t been subject to the pressure of public scrutiny that comes with my association with the Royal Family?” he added. “The answer is, I believe I would. But I wouldn’t have found a voice or an outlet for my story if it hadn’t been for the people I’m related to. And that puts me in a unique position of privilege and trust. I feel I have a duty to speak out, so I can help others who are suffering as I did.” Read the full article on the Daily Mail......»»

And some celebrities are using their platforms to participate in the conversation about their own experiences and the significance of outreach. Related: Rose McGowan Posts Tear-Filled Response To Bourdain's Suicide On Friday, Chrissy Teigen led the way when she vulnerably opened up about her own battle with postpartum depression (PPD). The 32-year-old penned: In my deepest, darkest post-partum depression, I would have personally never called a phone number. If John or my doctor never reached out, I would have never even known. It really can be a lonely hole. Watch the people you love and don’t be afraid to speak up. — christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) June 8, 2018 (Obviously not everyone is me and the hotline is incredibly important) — christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) June 8, 2018 During an exchange with a fan, the mom of two wrote: I just always thought PPD was the feeling of wanting to harm your children, and I never ever thought that way. Big cases like Susan Smith made it seem like THAT was PPD. I was just so deeply sad with myself and feeling worthless and useless and helpless. — christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) June 8, 2018 Patton Oswalt chimed in: National Suicide Hotline 1 800 273 8255 I’ve brushed up against this darkness and I know it’s a tempting exit but REACH OUT to ANYONE. Where you get to try again, every day. — Patton Oswalt (@pattonoswalt) June 8, 2018 Lena Dunham shared: People don’t commit suicide because of an event, a person or a thing. You wouldn’t blame a person for someone else’s cancer, nor call someone weak for developing it. Only when we start talking about depression as a disease will stigma be erased. — 💎 Lena Dunham 💎 (@lenadunham) June 8, 2018 Ashley Tisdale revealed her own battle with anxiety: See more thoughtful responses (below): When I was in the midst of crippling depression 15 years ago no one knew- except my husband and my theraphist. I was working hard making people laugh, doing photo shoots, constantly moving. I disappeared from friends & family. I’d say "Sorry I’ve been MIA, working non-stop." — Debra Messing (@DebraMessing) June 8, 2018 Depression is when hope hides from you and you think it’s gone for good. Katy Perry Suffered Crushing Depression After Album Flop

Claiming at least some kind of depression is pretty trendy these days. More of these celebrities need to be encouraged to commit suicide so they can be called out on their bluff and stop wasting everyone’s time. Shit or get off the pot. Slice an artery or shut up with the whining. Because self-diagnosed depression is spreading amongst the elite like a common cold. But this is Katy Perry’s world and we all just live in it. So when she says she suffered from situational depression we should pull up a chair and have a listen. Her “definitely not attention seeking at all” claim of depression was allegedly spurred by the public’s poor reception of her Witness album. I’d expect children and small domesticated animals to be upset after things don’t go their way, but a 33-year-old woman like her should be able to take it on the chin. Like how she normally does when her new boyfriend of the week gives her proper warning of his incoming climax. The “Hot n Cold” reaction to Katy Perry‘s last album deeply affected her. In Vogue Australia‘s new August cover story, the pop star opens up about the disappointment she faced following the release of her 2017 album Witness. “I have had bouts of situational depression, and my heart was broken last year because, unknowingly, I put so much validity in the reaction of the public, and the public didn’t react in the way I had expected to … which broke my heart,” Perry, 33, told the fashion magazine. While the LP made its debut atop the Billboard 200 chart, it failed to produce any No. 1 hits, with lead single “Chained to the Rhythm” peaking at No. 4. Previous albums scored several No. 1s: Teenage Dream and its bonus addition notched six, while Prism followed with two. I think Katy’s album flopped because there wasn’t a grandiose display of T&A. You can’t go from shooting fireworks from your tits on the last album and think people will automatically associate you with being a serious musician. The only way she can keep her career afloat now is by continuing to make stripper circus content to pair with those positive message pop melodies she wails on the radio. Olivia Munn was rocked by news of Anthony Bourdain's death, and while she mourned him along with the rest of us for the man we'd lost, she also decided to open up to her own fans about her long-standing struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts, too. Related: New Details Emerge About Bourdain's Death The actress took to Instagram over the weekend with several different touching and memorable posts, leading off with a very simple, sad tribute to Bourdain himself (below): Anthony Bourdain 💔A post shared by Olivia Munn (@oliviamunn) on Jun 8, 2018 at 6:52am PDT Awww. So sad. Related: Details Emerge Of Bourdain's Final Days But it's the one that followed immediately after which is gaining the most attention -- in this next post (below), Munn admitted to her own struggles with depression and really opened up in an unexpected way: I have lived with anxiety and sporadic bouts of depression for most of my adult life. 10 years ago I tackled it, learned to fully understand it and haven’t felt the dark depths of depression in about a decade. But before that, thoughts of suicide crossed my mind more than a few times. For those who don’t understand depression, when someone is in that place it’s not because they want to die... it’s because the ongoing, relentless darkness is too painful to endure anymore. You don’t have to suffer from anxiety and depression to feel that low. Something very sad or traumatic can happen to you just once to bring about that feeling of despair. But please listen to me- from someone who is telling you that she’s been where you are- when I say that SUICIDE IS NOT THE RIGHT CHOICE. 💛 Here is a list of the international suicide prevention numbers. Please don’t hesitate to call for you or someone you think needs help. A phone call could change everything. Even if you think you don’t want to get involved or don’t want your friend to be mad at you or if you’re the one suffering and don’t want to be talked out of it or feel insecure about asking for help. Those are temporary consequences. With suicide, there’s no do-overs. Please try every single option you can before making a choice that cannot be undone.A post shared by Olivia Munn (@oliviamunn) on Jun 8, 2018 at 7:04am PDT Wow. Very, very powerful stuff. And just a couple hours ago, she added one more very telling IG post (below): 🐰📘A post shared by Olivia Munn (@oliviamunn) on Jun 10, 2018 at 2:58pm PDT A nice, sweet wrap-up on what was otherwise a tough, tough weekend. Alanis Morissette Opens Up About Her "Isolating" Postpartum Depression: "There Are Days I"m Debilitated"

Just like her music, Alanis Morissette isn't afraid to get personal… In the latest issue of PEOPLE, the Jagged Little Pill singer opens up about her struggles with postpartum depression, which she first experienced after giving birth to her now-6-year-old son Ever Imre. In the latest issue of PEOPLE, the Jagged Little Pill singer opens up about her struggles with postpartum depression, which she first experienced after giving birth to her now-6-year-old son Ever Imre. Sadly, after welcoming daughter Onyx Solace 14 months ago, the musician is still struggling with the illness, and even experienced it "seconds later" after delivering her baby girl. Related: Jagged Little Pill Musical Is Coming In 2018! She confessed: "There are days I'm debilitated to the point where I can barely move... As a kid, I imagined having children and being with an amazing partner. This is a whole other wrench I didn't anticipate." The 43-year-old says her PPD is "four times worse" this time, and it has remarkably altered her life and personality. "It's very isolating... I'm used to being the Rock of Gibraltar, providing, protecting and maneuvering. It had me question everything. I've known myself to be a really incredible decision-maker and a leader that people can rely on. [Now] I can barely decide what to eat for dinner." It has even affected her seven-year marriage to Mario "Souleye" Treadway. "My main priority is that I want to make sure both of my children are loved and bonded with and provided for... Poor Souleye sometimes gets the dregs of my exhaustion at the end of the night. Even holding hands at this point is a deeply intimate experience." Ultimately, Morissette -- who relies on a combination of medication, homeopathic therapies, exercise, and songwriting -- wants to eliminate the shame associated with the condition. "The stigma remains in a really big way... There's this version of eye contact that I have with women who have been through postpartum depression where it's this silent, 'Oh my God, I love you. I'm so sorry."' However, Alanis isn't the only celeb who has opened up about PPD. To see the full list... Michael Phelps On Battling Depression: "I Am Extremely Thankful That I Did Not Take My Life"

It's refreshing to see that Michael Phelps (pictured here with wife Nicole) continues to be outspoken about his long battle with depression and its side effects. The Olympic swimmer and multi-multi-multi gold medalist is living at the top of his game as a father and husband right now, and because he's in such a good place in life, he's been more outspoken about when times weren't so good. Related: Michael Raced A Shark... Sort Of... For Shark Week! Speaking at the fourth annual conference of the Kennedy Forum this weekend, Phelps told the audience about his long, complicated battle with depression and how it was intertwined with his chosen career as a swimmer. The Olympian revealed (below): "I was always hungry, hungry, and I wanted more, I wanted to push myself really to see what my max was ... But really, after every Olympics I think I fell into a major state of depression ... I would say 2004 was probably the first depression spell I went through." And while Phelps dealt with a DUI after his 2004 Olympic run, and pictures showing him smoking from a bong after his 2008 Olympics, it was 2012 that he believes was the hardest time of his life. Related: Michael Is A VERY Happy Dad Now! He recounted to a hushed audience how he hit an all-time low after 2012, retreating to his bedroom for "three to five days" and barely eating or sleeping (below): "I didn't want to be in the sport anymore ... I didn't want to be alive anymore." It was at that point that Phelps realized finally that he needed help. He sought counseling, stress management programs, and more -- and he finally confronted his depression head-on. Related: Tom Brady Couldn't Love His Girls More And now, he's glad he did it, and he's glad that he overcame the stigma of talking about mental health. He said: "I was very good at compartmentalizing things and stuffing things away that I didn't want to talk about, I didn't want to deal with, I didn't want to bring up -- I just never ever wanted to see those things. ... [Mental health] has a stigma around it and that's something we still deal with every day. I think people actually finally understand it is real. People are talking about it and I think this is the only way that it can change. That's the reason why suicide rates are going up -- people are afraid to talk and open up. Those moments and those feelings and those emotions for me are light years better than winning the Olympic gold medal. I am extremely thankful that I did not take my life." Amen to ALL of that! GMA"s Ginger Zee Gets Candid About Depression Battle & Suicide Attempt In Her 20s: "I Just Shut Down"

These days, Ginger Zee's forecast might be bright and sun-shiney — but when she was 21, Good Morning America's future chief meteorologist saw nothing but stormy skies. [...] These days, Ginger Zee's forecast might be bright and sun-shiney -- but when she was 21, Good Morning America's future chief meteorologist saw nothing but stormy skies. In an interview with People, the ABC weather woman got candid about her depression battle -- and suicide attempt -- to promote new book Natural Disaster: I Cover Them. I Am One. Related: Catelynn Lowell Seeking Treatment After Having Suicidal Thoughts Years before she did the weather for ABC, Zee locked herself in her bathroom and tried to overdose on the pills in her medicine cabinet. She remembered: "I'd lost all hope. I just shut down. It wasn't worth living. I was wasting people's time and space." Thankfully, it turned out Zee merely ingested a non-lethal concoction of mostly Benadryl, but her feelings of worthlessness were still very present -- and dangerous. At the time, Zee had just graduated from college and was struggling to kick off her career. Before she knew it, Zee was stuck on an emotional roller coaster she couldn't get off: "Depression for me has been a couple of different things — but the first time I felt it, I felt helpless, hopeless and things I had never felt before. I lost myself and my will to live… In that moment, my brain, and probably a chemical somewhere within me, said, ‘You need to kill yourself.' The only voices I could hear were telling me, ‘You are not worth it.'" Zee had also battled anorexia as a young girl and had been diagnosed with narcolepsy in college. The medication she was taking at the time heightened her emotions dramatically, and, Zee believes, had even played a hand in her suicide attempt: "It amplified everything. Ups were amplified and downs were amplified. I've had to learn to live on that medication responsibly, because I can't not have it. You have to be really, really careful with it." Though her personal life felt like it was crashing, Zee's professional life was going the opposite direction. After scoring an on air gig at the NBC affiliate in Chicago by the age of 25, Zee joined GMA in 2011. Related: Tyrese Says Breakdown Was Caused By Depression Medication However, her depression began to creep back in the months leading up to her move to New York. Not wanting to relive her post-college low, Zee checked herself into a mental health facility ten days before starting at ABC -- where she met a therapist who "changed everything." She continued: "I think that there's a reason that people have these jobs where they go to school to study something that all of us don't. That's because they studied how to help people. You need that person who's impartial." Zee is also lucky enough to have an incredible support system that includes her mother and her husband, Ben Aaron. Not to mention, she has found new strength since becoming a mother. The meteorologist also found catharsis in writing her book, which she hopes will help others battling depression and suicidal thoughts to confront their dangerous feelings. During a recent interview on SiriusXM, the 68-year-old rocked opened up about his battle with depression before also revealing that he’s had thoughts of suicide. “Last year I was close to it, really close to it,” Rick said about nearly committing suicide last year. Rick stopped by the show to promote his upcoming album The Snake King and shared that one of the songs on the album is about his battle. “‘Suicide Manifesto’ is stuff I think about. I’ve been close to it,” Rick said. “When Robin Williams and Chester [Bennington and Chris Cornell] and those guys … I didn’t go, ‘Oh that’s terrible.’ I went, ‘I get it.’ I get being that lost and dark…You’re in so much pain that you just want it to end. I have been there and I know what it’s like and I understand. It’s just part of your makeup.” Rick went on to say that he is now taking medication and mediating to help with keep him in a better place. “We’ve all had the social front and it just makes me feel like such a liar when I go home and I look in the mirror and I go, ‘Really, you said that to somebody? But people sometimes think when everything is going well -- Colton is engaged and getting cast like crazy on TV -- the depression goes away. Related: Colton Is NOT Okay With The Way Hollywood Treats LGBT Actors! And for World Mental Health Day, Colton wanted to share with his Instagram followers that the battle is never over. He posted a photo of himself at one of his lowest times, which happened to be just a month ago, when he says he was crying in bed for three weeks and felt "paralyzed": Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay . This is a photo I took of myself about a month ago when I had reached a point where I had no idea what to do. I had been in bed crying/paralyzed for 3 wks with no explanation. My personal life & career were at an all time high. I've talked about this before but I can't stress enough how important it is to seek help when your feeling down or in your darkest moments. I've struggled with Anxiety & Depression since I was in the 5th grade & it's not something that should go untreated or uncared for. I know a lot of people don't understand mental illness & pass it off as ppl being dramatic...but it's a chemical Imbalance that no one wants to struggle through. It's not easy. So let's all take a second to reach out to those in need of help & those who just need someone to talk to or some encouragement. A little love goes a long way. My heart is with my fellow survivors & ppl struggling through this disease...you aren't alone. ❤️❤️❤️A post shared by Colton Haynes (@coltonlhaynes) on Oct 10, 2017 at 2:06pm PDT He isn't exaggerating about staying in bed. See a couple of his posts from that period: Beau & I clearly aren't getting out of bed todayA post shared by Colton Haynes (@coltonlhaynes) on Aug 30, 2017 at 2:29am PDT I have so much classA post shared by Colton Haynes (@coltonlhaynes) on Sep 3, 2017 at 9:12am PDT In studio wit @vanityfair x @fxnetworks for their amazing #Emmy party with my @ahsfx cast! 📷 x @justbish styled by @avoyermagyan in @emporioarmani . While cohosting The Talk on Wednesday, Michelle Williams courageously opened up about her longtime battle with depression -- which was at its height during her time in Destiny's Child. Related: Selena Gomez Reaches Out To Former Bestie Demi Lovato The 37-year-old singer revealed she confronted the group's manager (Mathew Knowles) about feeling depressed when she was topping the charts alongside Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland: "I'm in one of the top-selling female groups of all time, suffering with depression. When I disclosed it to our manager at the time, bless his heart, he was like, ‘You all just signed a multi-million dollar deal. You're about to go on tour. What do you have to be depressed about?' So I was like, ‘Oh, maybe I'm just tired.'" However, Michelle's depression continued to get worse "to the point where I was suicidal … and wanted out." So sad. The songwriter made a point to say that it is her mission to normalize the conversation surrounding mental illness, as it is often swept under the rug or left unsaid. This is such an important issue, and we commend Michelle for telling her story! Watch the full clip (below)! [Image via CBS.].....»»
