Matt Damon"s Downsizing Bombs At The Box Office Despite A Strong Weekend From Other New Releases

Tough weekend for Matt Damon. The star's father passed away last week (it was only publicly announced yesterday, as we reported), and now — on a far less important note, of course — his latest movie, Downsizing, has bombed at the box office. The star's father passed away last week (it was only publicly announced yesterday, as we reported), and now -- on a far less important note, of course -- his latest movie, Downsizing, has bombed at the box office. Related: Are Matt's Comments Making Things Worse?? The holiday flick featuring Damon shrunk down to five inches tall earned just $6.2 million from 2,558 theaters in its four-day debut over the Christmas weekend... which makes it good enough for a seventh place (!!) finish at theaters this weekend. YIKES. A 'C' score from CinemaScore really hasn't helped it -- and interestingly enough, per THR, the film has been skewing significantly older with 60% of ticket buyers for Downsizing being over 30 years old. Other than Damon's bomb, though, there was plenty of good news in theaters this weekend. First off, The Last Jedi took in $100.7 million from 4,233 theaters over the long weekend, pushing its two-week domestic total t now $397 million by the end of Christmas Day. Globally, the Star Wars film has taken in a whopping $745.5 million -- which has now helped Disney push past $6 billion total at the box office across the globe this year, which is the second time the company has accomplished that feat. Furthermore, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungleis on course to earn $64 million in its six-day debut this weekend from 3,765 theaters, even though it skewed 56% male. It hasn't opened yet in China. Pitch Perfect 3 won the weekend for Christmas, as well, opening to a $27 million four-day debut after being set out in 3,447 theaters beginning Friday. Opposite Jumanji, Pitch Perfect 3 skewed female with 69% of ticket buyers, while 57% of buyers were under 25 years old. Related: Should Matt Damon Be Cut From Ocean's 8?! There's one other movie of note on the weekend, too: Father Figures, which bombed just as hard (or arguably harder) than Downsizing. The male-skewing flick did only $4.2 million over the four-day weekend from nearly 4,000 theaters. Not great... Next week -- the time between Christmas Day and New Year's Day -- should make for a very lucrative film-going week, as it is every year. We'll see what happens then, but until that, here are some early holiday winners and losers! [Image via Paramount Pictures.].....»»
