Man Fatally Shot After Defending Gay Friends From Homophobe Who Threatened To Kill Them "Like Rats"

Juan Javier Cruz (above) was leaving a restaurant around 1 a.m. with some friends, some of whom are gay, when they were confronted by a man who began shouting about how he hated "gays" and wanted to kill them. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, the group and other diners were threatened outside of Restaurante Y Pupuseria Las Flores by Nelson Hernandez Mena (above, insert). The Honduras citizen allegedly shouted at them: "I hate you damned gays. I'm going to kill you all here... If we were in my country, I'd kill all of you like rats." When the 22-year-old Cruz defended his friends, Mena reportedly pulled out a handgun from his pants and fired several shots. Cruz was killed and another man was wounded in the ankle. Related: Chelsea Handler Wants Laws Against People Who Think Racism Is Funny Police told the Sun Sentinel that the 48-year-old faces charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and aggravated assault with a firearm. Officials stated it was too early to make a call on possible hate crime charges. Investigators say Mena had also been out with a few friends at the restaurant that night, and was "very drunk" after drinking 15 to 20 beers. The victim who was shot in the ankle had asked one of Mena's friends for his phone number, and believes that's why the shooter grew angry. Cruz's friends also said that Mena kept looking over at their group "with an angry look." None of Mena's friends had seen what happened, but reportedly heard the gunshots. The man who gave his number to Cruz's friend said he ran back and was confronted by "a man who said his friend had been killed." Related: Model Kidnapped & Almost Auctioned Off On The Dark Web Another one of Mena's friends asked him what happened, to which he replied "nothing," and "asked him to take him somewhere." Police arrested Mena around 10 a.m. on Sunday. He claimed that "a group of guys started attacking and threatening him" when he walked outside the Lake Worth restaurant. Mena recalled reaching for his firearm and pulling the trigger, but told officials that Cruz was not his target. He is being held without bail at the Palm Beach County jail. The Broadway star just dropped her album A Leap in the Dark – Live at Feinstein’s/54 Below, which includes songs from In the Heights, Aladdin, Wicked, Rent, Anastasia, as well as tunes from Celine Dion and Sarah McLachlan. Get the album now on iTunes and check out 10 Fun Facts about Arielle below: 1. I grew up in the Pumpkin Capitol of the world! Half Moon Bay, CA is a small town outside of San Francisco and is known for its thousands of pumpkins – including GIANT pumpkins that are bigger than a person! To this day, I love to eat or drink pumpkin-flavored anything! 2. I graduated high school with a 4.2 GPA, and magna cum laude from New York University. 3. Growing up, I used to love taking black & white photos on my dad’s vintage 1970’s manual camera (as in FILM!) and then developing them from the negatives in my own darkroom I set up in the basement of my home. It began a huge passion for photography and I love doing photoshoots of my friends and family. 4. I have a lot of different hobbies in addition to acting and singing. I learned to knit at age 10, and crotchet years later. I also love to paint abstract intuitive fluid acrylic paintings with mixed media designs and make lots of beaded jewelry. Bracelets and necklaces galore! 5. I once took my dad sky diving in an attempt to cure him of his fear of heights. He loved it and did great but I didn’t understand how to read the “how far we are from the ground meter”. My instructor, who was strapped to my back, realized we were two THOUSAND feet closer to the ground than was safe! So, he reached around me, pulled our parachute, and saved us. I had no idea that was what even happened until we were on the ground and he told me! Click inside for the rest of the fun facts… 6. One time I got lost in the “Red Light” District of Amsterdam late at night while traveling alone through Europe. I didn’t want look like an obvious tourist by taking out a map, because I thought that would make me a target. So I wandered for hours until I found my hostel. It was actually called “My Home” hostel, and I felt so lucky to be Home! 7. I trekked to the top of Mount Fuji in Japan overnight to watch the sunrise from the peak of the mountain. AND, I walked backwards all the way down the mountain to avoid shin splints. They thought I was crazy. But…It worked! 8. I know how to spin fire. I trained in spinning “poi”… which are balls at the end of a small chain that you hold in each hand. Then the ball is lit on fire, and you spin them around you to make circles of light in the air! I think it’s awesome! 9. I once had bell’s palsy, an unexplained medical condition with no cure, that caused the entire right side of my face to become totally paralyzed for 3 months. I thought I would have to stop acting and performing. Miraculously, the muscle movement slowly came back and I was grateful to be able to smile again. 10. I lived in Sydney, Australia for 6 months playing Princess Jasmine onstage in Disney’s Aladdin there. I also climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge (twice!) and went scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef (I’m also a certified scuba diver). It was a whole new world! ;) Download A Leap in the Dark now on iTunes and see Arielle on stage in Disney’s Aladdin on Broadway......»»

We're actually really happy for the Dutch-Tunisian actor, whose star has been rising fast ever since his sexy, award-winning turn as a kickboxer escaping a life of crime in 2013's Wolf. You may not have noticed him in the background of all those monsters and Tom Cruise in The Mummy, and he may be the only cast member of Murder On The Orient Express who isn't a huge movie star, but he's popping up more and more in English language films.
