American Idol Judges Plan To REALLY Soften Their Rejections This Season: "In The Past There Was… Taking Advantage Of People"

Is it just us, or do a LOT of people watch American Idol to see the absurd wanna-be contestants rejected early in the very first episodes?? Because if Katy Perry's recent comments are to be believed, it sure sounds like this season's American Idol judges — Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie — are going to [...] Is it just us, or do a LOT of people watch American Idol to see the absurd wanna-be contestants rejected early in the very first episodes?? Because if Katy Perry's recent comments are to be believed, it sure sounds like this season's American Idol judges -- Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie -- are going to change things up in a MAJOR way! Related: Seacrest Used Oscars Tape Delay In Case Of Confrontations In an interview with People about how the trio's judging styles will come across on TV this season, Perry dropped the bomb about the group's intention to let people down easily (below): "It's very constructive criticism. Personally, I'm a straight shooter. I'm very cut and dry sometimes. You know it seems a little not soft — I do try and watch myself because I do know how it feels to be in their shoes. I was in their shoes 10 years ago. I remind myself and I'm reminded and I'm inspired by all of their stories. I know it wasn't an overnight success for me; it's not going to be for them. They still have a long way to go. We're really real with them." Hmmm... So maybe this explains why there were able to let down Kelly Ripa so gently when SHE tried out for Idol this weekend?! Ha!!! Perry added the kicker, too (below): "We really encourage them. There's no dismissing and just sending off and saying, ‘You suck.' That's not how we roll. I think in the past there was some of that and maybe taking advantage of people; their actual skill sets for comedy. We don't do that anymore but we still laugh just as much." Seriously, though... do y'all think it's going to be too sugary-sweet on American Idol this year?! The comedy is part of what made that show! Simon Cowell became an overnight sensation in America simply because he wasn't nice to contestants!!! Thoughts??? Share 'em in the comments (below)!!! [Image via FayesVision/WENN.].....»»

American Idol Producer Defends Katy Perry"s Crazy Salary & Explains Why A Reboot Is Already Happening!

Don't judge — American Idol knows what it's doing! Producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz sat down with The Hollywood Reporter this week to dish on the reboot that has many fans saying — "Huh? But why?" – and explained why execs wasted no time bringing the hit show back. She also spoke on the insane paycheck Katy Perry is [...] Don't judge -- American Idol knows what it's doing! Producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz sat down with The Hollywood Reporter this week to dish on the reboot that has many fans saying -- "Huh? But why?" -- and explained why execs wasted no time bringing the hit show back. She also spoke on the insane paycheck Katy Perry is reported to be receiving as a judge -- and explained why the pop star is totally worth it! Video: Katy To Host 2017 MTV VMAs! The CEO of FremantleMedia North America, which produces Idol, says the show's production costs are on par with competing shows -- even with Katy Kat's reported $25 million salary. In an interview published on Thursday, she explained: "The show is not more expensive than its competitors in the genre. If other networks can make it work on similar properties, then there's no reason why ABC couldn't. This notion that the show [costs] a lot more than any other is completely untrue. We know that because we've made other shows in other genres. ABC wouldn't order something that didn't work for them financially." Showbiz is still a business, after all. The 51-year-old added that she thinks the Swish Swish singer will also benefit from this new job during this transitional phase of her career, noting: "Katy is in a transition in terms of her own career. It has been shown now what these platforms can do for artists. It has been beneficial to other people, whether it's on Idol or The Voice. But I think she genuinely cares. She auditioned when she was a guest judge on Idol in 2010 and then on the [U.K.] X-Factor. She's brilliant." Brilliant, indeed! We fondly remember Katy's 2010 guest spot -- specifically when she threatened to throw coke in Kara Dioguardi's face. Related: Fox Is Salty About Losing Idol The other judges have yet to be confirmed -- though rumored stars include Chris Daughtry, Lionel Richie, and Charlie Puth -- one name, however, was always in the cards to return: Ryan Seacrest! Frot-Coutaz admitted producers "always" planned on locking down the OG host, despite his super busy sched. She explained: "It was always going to happen. It's hard for Ryan. He's on the East Coast now and had to figure out how to make it work, but he's the hardest-working man in show business, so there will be some flying back and forth. But, as I said, it was always going to happen. He's the face of Idol." Eh, we think Simon Cowell's eye rolls are the face of Idol -- but Ry Guy is a close second! Related: Idol Alum Haley Reinhart Arrested For Battery! As for why ABC felt like it was the right time to bring back Idol just a year after its cancellation on Fox, the exec explained: "When Idol wrapped, we did extensive research. We found that we'd recruited new, much younger viewers. Do you wait five or six years, with the landscape continuing to evolve, and risk losing those followers? In thinking about doing the right thing for the brand and franchise, it felt to us that it was an unfinished story. Even though the show lived on Fox for 15 years, its audience is actually closer to that of ABC or CBS." We agree... if by "unfinished story" she means countless winners who have yet to launch legit music careers. LOLz! Will YOU be tuning into the next chapter of American Idol when it returns? Money Drama! American Idol Had To Expand Its Budget To Secure Final Judges Thanks To Katy Perry"s Crazy Paycheck!

We can't say we didn't see this coming. The American Idol revival seemed to be tripping from the start after paying a cool $25 million to secure first judge Katy Perry. The American Idol revival seemed to be tripping from the start after paying a cool $25 million to secure first judge Katy Perry. As we reported, Katy Kat's healthy paycheck royally screwed over the budget for the reality singing competition, leaving very little wiggle room to negotiate with the other two judges. Related: Lionel Thinks Scott Disick Is The 'Worst Person' For Sofia To Date! The production eventually booked Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan to complete the superstar trio, making it look like everything is running smoothly on the surface. But behind the scenes, execs are apparently worried that this overpriced concert might completely blow up in their faces! An insider told Page Six that Katy's deal -- not to mention Ryan Seacrest's hefty $15 salary -- left mere "pennies" for fellow judges, cutting into costs so deep that execs had to expand their budget to land the rest of the talent. The source explained: "ABC was originally going to spend no more than $50 million on talent. They had to expand their budget for Lionel." The network source told the publication that it was CEO Ben Sherwood who signed off on Katy's staggering paycheck without thinking of how it would impact the rest of the production budget: "Ben Sherwood blew the budget on Katy without thinking how that would impact other areas of the show budget. He gambled on her because of her appeal to a younger audience and huge social-media following. But Katy is effectively taking money from the other judges, who then had to be paid way less." We guess he was looking through those Kitty Purry tinted glasses. Can you really blame him? Video: American Idol Judges Discuss Las Vegas Shooting On GMA Understandably, Katy's deal caused some financial drama with Bryan and Richie. The source added: "The negotiations with Luke and Lionel have been fraught and difficult because of [Katy's paycheck]. They expected similar deals to Katy, but are, in fact, getting a hell of a lot less. In the end, ABC had to cough up a second round of money to sign the other judges." Just how much did they lowball the other musicians? A mere $2.5 million each! This measly offer offended Richie and Bryan, of course, who refused to signed their deals until ABC coughed up more dough. The source continued: "As of last week, their contracts were not done. Sherwood authorized ABC to cough up more money. They're both making about $7 million each now. This has become a very expensive show. If ‘Idol' doesn't work, it will blow up big time in Sherwood's face. If it does work, he's a genius." Despite multiple sources detailing the money drama, an ABC rep claimed to Page Six that it's "not true. Ben never had to get involved, and the deals were done within the original ABC talent budget for the show." Hmm... Either way, if they wanna compete with The Voice, they gotta fork up that Adam Levine money!.....»»
