Review: ‘Murder on the Orient Express’: Who(Under)dunnit?

Kudos go to Kenneth Branagh, as the actor/director faced a tough challenge given that the original 'Murder on the Orient Express' is such a memorable film with Agatha Christie's twisty murder mystery much analyzed over throughout the years, and for the most part the new version is a very game effort. But the [...] Kudos go to Kenneth Branagh, as the actor/director faced a tough challenge given that the original ‘Murder on the Orient Express‘ is such a memorable film with Agatha Christie’s twisty murder mystery much analyzed over throughout the years, and for the most part the new version is a very game effort. But the biggest issues for the movie come in the comparisons to past editions as well as serving up enough meat for the wealth of talent to chew. Much of the film remains faithful to what many may remember, but Branagh and Michael Green, who provided the screenplay, do take some liberties in order to put their stamp on this popular work, including an ending that offers a fresh take on the personality and motivations of the meticulous inspector. For those unaware of the original, the story centers on the brilliant but weary detective longing for a vacation, but getting pulled back into action and hitching a ride aboard the Orient Express, where the seemingly diverse occupants are soon caught up in a murder mystery when one of the passengers is murdered. Poirot is portrayed as a detective whose biggest asset and annoyance is the inequality of life, always seeking to find a perfect balance down to his OCD fascination with the straightening of ties. The motley crew includes the slithery arts dealer Edward Ratchett (Johnny Depp), who unsuccessfully attempts to hire Poirot when receiving a threatening message. He’s accompanied by his sketchy accountant Hector MacQueen (Josh Gad) and manservant Edward Masterman (Derek Jacobi). Ratchett has a brief flirtation with Caroline Hubbard (Michelle Pfeiffer), a widowed woman initially believed to be husband hunting. Other passengers aboard the Express include a violent count and his ailing countess (Sergie Polunin and Lucy Boynton), a haughty princess (Judi Dench) and her faithful servant (Olivia Colman), a German professor (Willem Dafoe), a seemingly altruistic doctor (Leslie Odom Jr.), a slick car salesman (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), an astute governess (Daisy Ridley), and a missionary with a troubled past (Penelope Cruz). Others aboard the train include the conductor (Marwan Kenzari) and Poirot’s confidant and the train’s concierge Bouc (Tom Bateman). As Poirot settles in for a night’s slumber, he’s continually awakened by commotions in the hallway, each of which garner his attention, but also serve as a distraction for the murder that is about to happen. Add in an avalanche that stalls the train, and Poirot has a captive audience as he’s asked by Bouc to investigate. One by one, Poirot questions each of the passengers, discerning their potential motives and soon uncovering that the murder has little to do with the initial motive and that each of the strangers are attempting to cover any possible ties or motives to the real reason for the murder. While Branagh does a stellar job of playing Poirot and has one of the more meaty roles in the film, one of the big downfalls is that the characters don’t all feel fleshed out. Ridley’s keen yet secretive Mary Debenham, Odom’s loyal Dr. Arbuthnot, Pfeiffer’s dramatic Caroline Hubbard and Gad’s nervous Hector MacQueen all get their due, but the remainder of the cast seemingly have little to do or say within the film’s just under two-hour runtime. Even for the brilliant Poirot, it feels as though he summizes several characters rather quickly while the viewer never really gets more than a cursory glance at their true nature. But while the screenplay fails some of its actors, Branagh and his crew have done a great job of recreating the period and the look of the film from costuming to set design is top notch. After a bit of a slow start, the film does pick up and latter portion of the movie really offers an interesting whodunnit. For those who have not witnessed the previous editions, the new Murder on the Orient Express will keep you engaged with an interesting finale that paints the Poirot that movie buffs know in a fresh way. For those aware of the past versions, it’s still a passable and enjoyable film and different enough to make it worth viewing, but it’s still hard to match such a classic. William Herring, 42, and Brianna Brochhausen, 22 (both pictured, above), are facing murder charges in Springfield Township after investigators determined foul play during an incident that initially occurred back on February 14. The parents positioned Hunter on his stomach on the bed, and apparently covered his entire head and body with a comforter. Then, they went outside to smoke cigarettes for a break -- returning to the room about ten minutes later only to discover that Hunter was not breathing and unresponsive. After being taken to the hospital, the baby actually survived on life support for nearly three full weeks, but he eventually succumbed to "complications of suffocation" on March 3. JAY-Z has already revealed the inspiration behind the title of his latest album 4:44, but one fan may have just discovered a second meaning! The sleuth took to Twitter on Tuesday to point out how the numbers of Hov's album are the same as the location of an explosive, highly-publicized moment from his past -- one that kicked off speculation of his infidelity long before Lemonade. Related: Ups & Downs & Ups Of Beyoncé's Marriage To JAY-Z! Of course, we're talking about the moment when Beyoncé's sister Solange attacked the rap titan in an elevator after the 2014 Met Gala at The Standard Hotel! The fan pointed out that the address of The Standard in NYC is 444 West 13th Street -- making a decent argument that 444 = 4:44: I'm at The Standard where Solange beat Jay-Z's ass in the elevator. THE ADDRESS IS 444. I AM SHOOK pic.twitter.com/ZKtAVxMQiS — Stephen (@StephenOssola) July 26, 2017 Wow. Though the numbers may just be a coincidence, as Jay revealed the title came after he "woke up, literally, at 4:44 in the morning, 4:44 a.m." to write the album's title track. But seeing as how most of the album features Jay confessing to his adultery and other indiscretions, this new theory is definitely worth mulling over. The 47-year-old even references the Solange incident in the album's opener Kill Jay Z, in which he raps: "You egged Solange on/ Knowin' all along all you had to say you was wrong." Looks like this theory holds up until he says otherwise! Keep speculating, y'all......»»

Police are now saying it's safe to call Bruce McArthur (above) a "serial killer" after the 66-year-old was charged with first degree murder in the deaths of Majeed Kayhan, Soroush Marmudi, and Dean Lisowisk, all of whom had been reported missing. The arrest came after investigators found dismembered skeletal remains of three unidentified victims "hidden at the bottom of planters" at a home McArthur used as storage for his landscaping business. Related: Police Rule Sketchy Death Of Billionaire Couple As Double Homicide Toronto Police Det. Sgt. Hank Idsinga said during a press conference: "The city of Toronto has never seen anything like this. It's a serial killer. An alleged serial killer. He has taken some steps to cover his tracks and we have to uncover these victims and identify these victims." Authorities are now searching through planters, flower pots, and backyards throughout the city for more possible victims. The detective added: "We do believe there are more (victims). I have no idea how many more there are going to be." Police have yet to confirm if the skeletal remains are those of the men McArthur is accused of killing, Idsinga added, and are awaiting the results of a DNA test. But McArthur has already been charged with first-degree murder in the presumed deaths of Selim Esen and Andrew Kinsman, who were both reported missing from Toronto's Gay Village area last year. Video: Viola Davis Learns Melania Trump Loves HTGAWM Per the Toronto Star, Idsinga had previously confirmed that McArthur was known in Toronto's Gay Village and was in a relationship with Kinsman, but did not comment on the suspect's connection to the other victims. Idsigna revealed that Kayhan, a 58-year-old immigrant from Afghanistan, is believed to have been killed in October 2012; Mahmudi, 50, is believed to have been killed in August 2015; and Lisowick, a 47-year-old who lived at a shelter, is believed to have been killed between April 2016 and March 2017. Police plan to excavate at least two sites associated with McArthur's work in the search for more possible victims. The suspect remains in custody and will appear in court via video on Valentine's Day (February 14), of all days. Tragic. Our hearts go out to the families of the victims (pictured below).
